Why are PRP injections effective?

Platelets are the components in your blood that enable its clotting function. They’re also rich in special proteins called growth factors that promote cellular regeneration. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a solution made by combining platelets from your own blood with your plasma.

This creates a highly concentrated solution that can be delivered back into your body at the site of joint pain and/or tissue damage. Once injected, PRP goes to work, reducing inflammation and promoting new tissue growth, essentially repairing your body from within.

PRP is an excellent choice for people who are living with pain but want to avoid or at least postpone surgical intervention. It offers a way to boost your natural healing abilities without drugs or any form of cutting.

What is the process for getting PRP injections?

The first step is a simple blood draw. The process is much like having blood taken for lab testing or donation (Dr. Rispoli takes a bit more blood than she would for testing and far less than if you were donating blood).

That blood is placed in a medical centrifuge, which spins it at a high rate of speed. This separates the solid components of your blood from the liquid plasma. Dr. Rispoli then collects the isolated platelets and returns them to the now-cleared plasma. The PRP is then drawn into one or more syringes.

Dr. Rispoli then injects the PRP into the area of focus. PRP is often used to treat injured joints, and ultrasound imaging ensures the solution reaches the targeted area.

There is no need for downtime or special care after PRP injections. You can return to your daily routines immediately after your visit.

How long does it take to see results after PRP injections?

It takes time for your body to create new tissue and heal damaged joints. Some people report improvement within just a few days, likely due to the anti-inflammatory properties of PRP injections.

But it takes months to see the full results. As your body develops new tissue to repair the damage, you’ll see improvements like reduced pain and better mobility. Some people need a series of PRP injections to achieve the best possible results.
